Spooky season is here. Time for all the little (and not so little) ghosts and goblins to come out and haunt the streets. Before fright night begins, here are some tips to ensure that the face you see on November 1st is not scarier than the one from Halloween.
Preparing your skin for costume makeup and ensuring proper removal afterward is essential to helping prevent any potential skin issues following your fun day and night.
Properly Prep Skin:
Cleanse & Exfoliate
Start by gently cleansing and exfoliating your skin prior to applying makeup. This will help create a smooth surface for makeup application. Apple Chamomile Cleansing Gel and Cucumber Face Polish are both gentle enough to cleanse and exfoliate skin without drying it out.
Moisturize
If your skin is looking and feeling dry, use a moisturizer to help alleviate any chance that your makeup will enhance the appearance of dry skin. This step will also help create a smooth surface for base makeup.
Makeup Application:
Be aware of what you are using on your skin. While theatrical makeup is fun, it can potentially cause irritation. The heavier makeup is more likely to clog pores and cause breakouts.
Always check the ingredients before applying anything to your skin. For all skin types, especially sensitive, it’s best to avoid fragrance and drying alcohol. Oily skin types should opt for water-based products to help prevent clogged pores. When possible, choose conventional makeup over heavier halloween-specific cosmetics that have a higher probability of causing skin problems.
Don’t use last year’s makeup. Left untouched for a year, it has the potential to have bacteria on it and the quality has been compromised. It is best to throw them out after Halloween and start fresh every year.
Start with a primer
Consider using a primer before applying makeup. This will create a barrier between your skin and makeup and help improve the application, appearance and longevity of your Halloween makeup. Oilier skin types may find that using a primer can also double as their moisturizing step after cleansing.
Set your makeup
Once your makeup is applied, use a setting spray or powder to help it last all night.
Makeup Removal:
It’s always a bad idea to sleep in your makeup and Halloween is no exception. Take the time to properly remove your makeup so your skin won’t be a disaster in the morning. Halloween makeup can be stubborn to take off. Be patient with removal and resist the urge to scrub your skin aggressively.
A double cleanse will likely be needed to remove all makeup completely. If you’re wearing heavy eye makeup, consider using a dedicated eye makeup remover or Apple Chamomile Micellar Water as the first step in cleaning your skin. Remove any false lashes and other embellishments you have applied. First cleanse with an oil-based cleanser such as Apricot Cleansing Oil to help break down heavy makeup, then follow with a gentle cleanser and washcloth to thoroughly remove all remaining makeup.
If, even after double cleansing, you still have remnants of makeup on your skin, use a cotton pad soaked with Lavender & Aloe Facial Toner to remove any remaining makeup. This is also a great opportunity to ensure pores are not clogged and skin is replenished.
As the final step, apply a hydrating serum and/or moisturizer to help replenish your skin.
